MARSHALL EARNS MEN'S HONOR FOR MOUNTAIN STATE
Adron Marshall was named NAIA Independent Men's Basketball Player of the Week after helping the Cougars to a 99-82 win over NCAA Division II Salem International.
Marshall scored 25 and added six rebounds in the 17-point victory, finishing 9-of-13 from the floor, including 6-of-9 from beyond the 3-point arc.
He was also 1-of-2 from the foul line for Mountain State, who enters the semester break at 11-0 and No. 1 in NAIA Division I Men's Basketball.
VOORHEES' WHALEY NAMED WOMEN'S PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Brittney Whaley is the NAIA Independent Women's Basketball Player of the Week after averaging better than 15 points per game, including a 30-point outing last week in a 1-2 week for Voorhees College.
Whaley opened the week with 19 points, four rebounds and two steals in a loss to Brescia, going 9-of-16 from the floor and 3-of-4 at the line.
She then went 2-of-7 from the floor and 3-of-4 at the line with seven points in a loss to Northwood, followed by 30 points against Johnson & Wales University, going 12-of-18 from the floor and 6-of-9 at the foul line, also pulling down four rebounds and grabbing two steals.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK TO RETURN JAN. 7
NAIA Independent Basketball's Player of the Week awarding will resume Monday, Jan.7, prior to the first NAIA National Player of the Week awarding on Wednesday, Jan. 9.
Jan. 9 will also represent the next release of the NAIA Top 25 polls, which will then be released weekly through the end of the NAIA basketball season.
MOUNTAIN STATE NO. 1 HEADING TO HOLIDAY BREAK
For the second week in-a-row, Mountain State University is No. 1 in the second regular season National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Men's Basketball Division I Top 25 Coaches' Poll, announced Dec. 12. The Cougars' high-powered offense averages 97.9 points per game, including 100 points in five games. MSU recently took down NCAA Division II Lincoln (Penn.) 123-80 to win the West Virginia Tech Baisi Classic.
Georgetown gets the other first-place nod with 309 total points - the Tigers lead Division I with 12 wins. GC holds a slight edge, 309 to 306 points, over third-place Concordia (Calif.). Oklahoma Baptist and Louisiana State University-Shreveport stay put at No. 4 and 5, respectively.
Park University also received consideration, earning nine points to finish 31st in the poll, outside the Top 25. The third regular season poll will be released on Wednesday, Jan. 9.
