SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Top-ranked Oklahoma City University shot a record-breaking 288 to jump into the team lead at the 2006 NAIA Women's Golf National Championships at Blackthorn Golf Club. The Stars were led by freshman Ashley Sholer who shot a four-under 68 to lead the chase for individual medalist honors.

Oklahoma City broke their own single round record of 296 set at Blackthorn in 2005 as well as shattering the lowest opening round of 313 set by Embry-Riddle University (Fla.), also in 2005. The Stars team score was made up of Sholer's 68 followed by a 71 by Tamara Campbell, a 74 by 2005 medalist Emily Albrektson and a 75 by Toni Pyrum. The even-par team score for the team was enough to give them a 29 shot lead over the 317 carded by second place Southern Nazarene University (Okla.) with University of British Columbia a further shot back after a 318.

Sholer leads the individual competition by three strokes over teammate Campbell. Lillie West of Southern Nazarene shot an even par 72 to stand alone in third while a quartet of players are tied for fourth including defending champ Albrektson.

Second round tee times begin at 8 a.m. on Wednesday as 120 golfers compete for the individual title and 23 teams vie for the team crown. The 72-hole event hosted by Bethel College (Ind.) and the South Bend Regional Sports Commission continues through Friday, May 26.
