LINDSBORG, Kan.--The New York Jets have selected Christine Fischer, Beloit, Kan., for an internship during the team's preseason training camp at Hoftstra University.
Fischer currently is a junior majoring in sports management and communications at Bethany College (Kan.). She also competes in the javelin and long jump for the Swedes track & field team.
Fischer is one of 40 interns who will be in charge of practice-field setup, escorting VIPs, selling merchandise and working home preseason games. Fischer will report to the New York Jets preseason training camp in mid-July and will work until the end of August.
"This summer will be a great experience for me. I hope to gain a lot of experience in the professional sports industry," Fischer said.
Fischer applied for the internship after browsing the internet for job opportunities. The Jets contacted her after reviewing her application. As one of 82 phone interviewees, Fischer made the final cut to become one of 40 summer interns.
Bethany professor Paul Gentine said Fischer was a good choice. "Christine is very hardworking; she is smart and is pursuing something she really wants to do. I think she will be very successful," he said.
After completing her internship, Fischer plans to finish her senior year at Bethany College, then apply to graduate school in sports management. Upon completion of graduate school, Fisher hopes to start a career with a professional sports team.
"The internship will be a good opportunity for me to meet a lot of people who can help me to get my foot in the door. It will hopefully provide me with some great contacts for future career opportunities," Fischer said.
