OLATHE, Kan. - Fourteenth-seeded McKendree College (Ill.) opened the 2006 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship with a 2-0 victory over No. 19 seed Siena Heights University (Mich.) Wednesday morning at the College Boulevard Activity Center in Olathe, Kan.
Following a scoreless first half, McKendree opened the scoring three minutes into the second half as Sarah Ryan tucked a shot inside the near post to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead at 47:59. It was Ryan's second goal of the season. In the final minute of the game, McKendree's Brittany Fuzessery found the back of the net on a free kick from outside to box to secure the victory.
Natalie Jameson of McKendree picked up her eighth shutout of the season with six saves. For the game, the Bearcats out-shot Siena Heights, 19-13, including a 14-5 edge in the second half.
Siena Heights, the Region VIII Champion, ends its season with a 15-7-1 record.
McKendree (17-3-1) advances to Thursday's second round against third-seeded Martin Methodist College (Tenn.) beginning at 10 a.m.
