OLATHE, Kan. - Tiffin University (Ohio) moved on to the second round of the NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship with a 3-1 first-round victory over Virginia Intermont College Wednesday afternoon at the College Boulevard Activity Center in Olathe, Kan.
Tiffin, the tournament's No. 16 seed, used three second-half goals to earn the victory and improve to 17-3-2 on the season. Virginia Intermont, the No. 17 seed, concludes its season with a 15-8-0 record.
Virginia Intermont, the Region XII Champion, grabbed a 1-0 lead into half time as Jennifer Chirco headed in her third goal of the season in the 41st minute. At the half, the Lady Cobras held a 5-3 advantage in shots.
In the second half, Tiffin took advantage of the strong north wind at its back by out-shooting Virginia Intermont, 14-2, during the final 45 minutes. The Lady Dragons evened the game up at 1-1 in the 50th minute when Andrea Guthrie scored off a rebound in the box. Guthrie then scored the eventual game winner and her second of the game in the 76th minute, pushing her season total to 10. Tiffin added an insurance goal at 89:18 when Emily Goldaberry found the back of the net off an assist from Clara Gossett.
Tiffin goalkeeper Jen Rosselit earned the victory by snagging two saves.
With the win, the Lady Dragons advance to Thursday's second round for a match-up with top-seeded Azusa Pacific University (Calif.) beginning at 12:30 p.m.
