OLATHE, Kan. - Fifteenth-seeded Northwood College (Fla.) earned a bid into second round of the 2006 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship by way of a 3-1 win over No. 18 seed Morningside College (Iowa) Wednesday afternoon at the College Boulevard Activity Center in Olathe, Kan.
Northwood got onto the scoreboard first after midfielder Lene Bjerkeli went to the far post to give the Seahawks a 1-0 lead at 12:45. The Mustangs answered at 28:12 when Brooke Niles scored off a rebound in the box to knot the score at 1-1.
The second half would be all Seahawks though as Sofia Abramsson tapped in the go-ahead goal off an assist by Katya Salguero in the 52nd minute and Bjerkeli scored her second and final goal on the afternoon at 55:30.
Both teams utilized a strong north wind to their advantage as Morningside had 10 shots in the first half compared to two in second half, while Northwood had six in the first half and 11 in the second.
Morningside, the Region III Champion, ends its season with a 15-5-1 record.
Northwood (17-0-0) advances to Thursday's second round against second-seeded Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) beginning at 3 p.m.
