OLATHE, Kan. - Host institution Park University (Mo.) advanced to the second round of the 2006 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship with a 2-0 victory over College of the Southwest (N.M.) Wednesday night at the College Boulevard Activity Center in Olathe, Kan.
Park took control of the game early, scoring twice in the first 21 minutes of play. At 12:53, Maria Ruiz opened the scoring off an assist from Laura Baeza to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Eight minutes later, Ruiz scored her second of the game and 21st of the season, beating the goalkeeper on the breakaway to provide an insurance goal for the 13th-seeded Pirates.
Park, which is co-hosting the National Championship for the second year in a row, out-shot No. 20 seed College of the Southwest, 33-6.
Pirate goalkeeper Megan Newland recorded her 13th shutout of the season by grabbing four saves.
College of the Southwest, the 2006 Region VI Champion, ends its season with a 17-2 record.
Region IV Champion Park will take on No. 4 seed Houghton College (N.Y.) Thursday starting at 5:30 p.m.
