COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College women's soccer team welcomes three of the best NAIA women's soccer teams this weekend as the Blue Raiders play host in the 2007 Women's Soccer KELME Classic at Lindsey Wilson Park.
The classic kicks off at 5 p.m. CT on Friday, September 14, as No. 1-ranked Azusa Pacific (Calif.) University plays No. 3-ranked Lee (Tenn.) University.
In Friday's nightcap, the No. 2-ranked Blue Raiders play host to No. 5-ranked Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College in a battle of the last two NAIA national champions.
On Saturday, Lee plays Martin Methodist at 5 p.m. CT and Lindsey Wilson hosts Azusa Pacific at 7 p.m. CT.
"This will be the premier classic in the NAIA this season," Lindsey Wilson women's soccer coach Drew Burwash said. "We have four of the top programs in the country here this weekend. I expect the fans will see high quality soccer with a national tournament feel."
Top-ranked Azusa Pacific -- last season's national runner-up -- enters the KELME Classic with a 3-0-1 record. The Cougars have allowed just a single goal in their first four matches and senior goalkeeper Jill Colfer-Martinson is the program's all-time shutout leader with 37 clean sheets.
Lee -- the 2005 national runner-up -- is 4-0 on the season and is out-scoring its opponents by more than five goals per match. Senior forward Janaina Novaes is second in the NAIA this season with nine goals. She has at least one goal in each of the Lady Flames' four matches and recorded a hat-trick earlier this season against Faulkner (Ala.) University.
Martin Methodist -- the 2005 NAIA national champions -- is 4-2 on the season entering the classic. Senior forward Amanda Johansson leads the RedHawks with four goals on the season and sophomore midfielder Shannon Walter leads the team with 12 points (3 goals, 6 assists).
Lindsey Wilson is 3-0-1 on the season and winners of three straight matches after a season-opening tie to Spring Arbor (Mich.) University. The Blue Raiders are coming off a 3-0 win at No. 15-ranked Covenant (Ga.) College.
Lindsey Wilson senior forward Sashsheena Stewart leads the Blue Raiders attack which is averaging four goals per match this season. Stewart leads the team with five goals on the season.
The KELME Classic concludes on Saturday night.
