KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the third straight time, Martin Methodist (Tenn.) is the No. 1 team in the second regular season edition of the 2008 NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, announced today (Sept. 16). Standing with a perfect 4-0 record, the RedHawks hold the narrow lead over No. 2 Azusa Pacific (Calif.) by a 609-606 point margin. Martin Methodist owns a 25-1 goals advantage in its four wins. MMC hosts No. 4 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) on Friday (Sept. 19) in a non-conference battle
Azusa earned six first-place votes and has shut out three of its four opponents. The Cougars took down Bethel (Tenn.), who was receiving votes in last week’s poll, by a count of 8-1 on Sept. 6.
Lee (Tenn.) holds at No. 3 with 579 total points. Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) is right behind at No. 4 with 570 points followed by No. 5 Concordia (Ore.) with 545 points.
Four teams vault into the Top 25 for the first time this season: No. 19 Spring Arbor (Mich.), No. 20 Rocky Mountain (Mont.), No. 21 Vanguard (Calif.) and No. 22 Benedictine (Kan.). Perhaps making the biggest jump is No. 9 California State University-San Marcos. The Cougars are unbeaten at 4-0-2 including an upset win over then-No. 22 Kansas Wesleyan last Saturday.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences, independents and unaffiliated groups. The third regular season Top 25 poll will be announced on Sept. 23.
