Oct. 7, 2008
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – There is a new No. 1 team and five programs have at least one top-ranked vote in the fifth regular season edition of the 2008 NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, announced today (Oct. 7). Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) knocks off Martin Methodist (Tenn.) as the top program this week as the Blue Raiders earned 661 total points and 14 first-place votes. LWC has won three in-a-row including triumphs over No. 2 Lee (Tenn.) and most recently No. 10 Berry (Ga.). Lindsey Wilson is No. 1 for the first time since Sept. 19, 2007.
Martin had held the No. 1 ranking for the first five polls this season. However, a 2-1 loss to Lee last Saturday snapped a 24-match unbeaten streak. Lee, this week’s No. 2 with a 10-1 record including four wins over Top 10 opponents, was the previous team to take down Martin in 2007 before the streak began.
No. 2 Lee is right behind Lindsey by two total points (659) and posted five first-place votes. No. 3 Azusa Pacific (Calif.) checks in with 640 points and three first-place votes while Martin is at No. 4 with 631 points and one first-place mention. No. 5 Concordia (Ore.) is one of six teams without a loss and recorded 607 points and the final first-place nod.
No. 12 Trinity Christian (Ill.) owns the most wins in the country with a 12-0 record.
No. 22 Lindenwood (Mo.) sneaks into the Top 25 this week with a 5-0-1 mark. This is the second time the Lions have been ranked this year – the other was at No. 21 (Sept. 23).
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences, independents and unaffiliated groups. The sixth regular season Top 25 poll will be announced on Oct. 14.
