KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The 2008 NAIA Women’s Soccer National Players of the Week have been released for the sixth time this season. Bridget Brotherton of Azusa Pacific (Calif.) University is honored as the NAIA Offensive Player of the Week while Mallory Phillips of Savannah College of Art & Design (Ga.) is selected as the NAIA Defensive Player of the Week, for the week of Oct. 6-12. These winners were chosen out of a pool of conference player of the week performers among 22 conferences, independents and unaffiliateds.
Brotherton, a 5-6 senior forward from Alta Loma, Calif., posted two goals and one assists for five points in two conference road wins last week for Azusa Pacific. In the 2-0 win at Westmont (Calif.), she tacked on her team’s second goal in the 63rd minute to put the game out of reach. She played a major offensive role in the 2-1 road win at then-No. 7 California Baptist tying the game at 1-1 and assisting in the game-winner. In national statistics, Bridget is 23rd in the country in assists per match (0.7).
Phillips, a 5-6 senior defender from Lexington, S.C., was part of a backline to limit the nation’s No. 1 scorer Lisa Ohberg to just one shot on goal. The Bees took down No. 6 Northwood (Texas) 3-2 and won for the first time in 11 all-time meetings with NU. The loss for Northwood snapped a 10-match winning streak to start the year. With the win, SCAD moves from No. 16 to No. 13 in today’s (Oct. 14) Top 25 poll.
The next Player of the Week announcement will be released on Tuesday, Oct. 21.
