McPherson, Kan. - Led by the Lady Bulldogs’ all-time goal and point scorer Haley Cook, McPherson turned back the Lady Spires in a rare Sunday afternoon match, 2-0.

Cook had a hand/foot in on both of the Bulldog goals, scoring once and providing the assist on the other as she moved past Monique Buhl as the Lady Bulldogs’ all-time point scorer.

Cook, now with 30 career goals, having passed the previous school record of 26 by Monique Buhl in the Bulldogs’ September win over Central Christian, and now with 68 career points, surpassing Buhl’s previous record of 66 points thanks to her three points (two for a goal, one for an assist) against the University of Saint Mary.

“The weather was not kind to either team today with ridiculously strong winds wreaking havoc on the speed of play,” offered McPherson head coach Robert Talley.

“We struggled a bit the first half adjusting to the field conditions and Mother Nature, but were able to keep Saint Mary at bay, only allowing one shot on goal.”

“The second half we started playing the way we know how and were successful scoring two nicely played goals.”

The Bulldogs’ first goal came nine minutes into the second period when Cook scored unassisted.  With just under two minutes left in the match, Cook found an open Kelli Fowlds who finished off the play for her second goal of the season.

“The team has done a great job these last three games posting shutouts and only allowing a total of three shots in the last 290 minutes of play.”

The win raised the overall record of the Lady Bulldogs to 8-4-2, and into third place in the conference race with a 4-2-1 KCAC mark.

On Wednesday, McPherson will travel to Sterling in a 2:00 p.m. contest.
