CHICAGO, Ill. – Junior goalkeeper Danielle Wagner (Worth, Ill./University of Illinois/Stagg) became the new Saint Xavier University career shutouts leader Wednesday night (Oct. 15) as the Cougar women’s soccer team defeated visiting Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.), 7-0, in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) women’s soccer action at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Wagner finished the game with two saves en route to her second shutout of the season and the 22nd shutout of her illustrious collegiate career. Kelly Rank, who compiled 21.5 shutouts with the Cougars from 1999-2002, held the old record for the program.
Saint Xavier scored its first goal in the 24th minute of regulation on a breakaway by freshman forward Larissa Jondle (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X) set up by sophomore defender Nikki Gendron (Rockford, Ill./Boylan). The Cougars never looked back scoring six more unanswered goals for the big conference victory. Jondle finished the game with two goals and an assist, while junior forward Cecilia Cline (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) also posted a pair of goals with an assist. The remaining three goals were scored by sophomore midfielder Carey Brown (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West), freshman forward Casey Meehan (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East), and freshman forward Lauren LaRoy (Orland Park, Ill./Marist). Junior defender Jessica Martinez (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) and sophomore defender Jessica Belmonte (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) each logged an assist in the victory.
