McKendree Advances With 1-0 Win
OLATHE, Kan. - Sixteenth-seeded McKendree College (Ill.) defeated seventeenth-seeded Savannah College of Art and Design 1-0 in the first game of the 2005 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship.
After a scoreless first half, freshman midfielder Katelyn Cleveland scored her 26th goal of the season in the 48th minute to put the Bearcats up 1-0. Junior midfielder Katie Hubbard recorded the assist of the goal. McKendree out-shot SCAD 23-9 in the match and goalkeeper Natalie Jameson posted her sixth shutout of the season. McKendree is making its second national tournament appearance.
Junior goalkeeper Lisa Gallant made nine saves in the match for the Bees. SCAD was making its first national tournament appearance after capturing the school's first Region 14 title. The Bees conclude their season with an overall record of 11-8-1.
McKendree improves their record to 17-2-1 on the season and advances to Thursday's second round matches. They will face top-seeded Martin Methodist College (Tenn.). Game time is set for noon (CST) at College Boulevard Activity Center.
