Bethel Advances to Second Round with 3-1 Victory
OLATHE, Kan. - Fifteenth-seeded Bethel College (Tenn.) scored two second-half goals to pull away from John Brown University (Ark.) 3-1 in the first round of the 2005 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship. The 20-team single-elimination tournament continues through Tuesday, November 22.
Bethel got on the scoreboard first with a goal by Carla Chambers in the 29th minute with an assist from Candice Cunningham. John Brown tied up the match less than five minutes later when Nikki Ganter scored an unassisted goal after a corner kick, her team-leading 14th of the season.
Junior midfielder Alicia James broke the one-all tie in the 51st minute of play when her left-footed shot got past the John Brown goalkeeper, Natalie Wall. Leah O'Grady and Cheryl Noonan earned an assist on the goal. O'Grady scored the game's final goal, and her 27th of the season, in the 65th minute off a rebounded shot.
Sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Wall made eight saves in the match. The Golden Eagles were making their first national championship appearance and qualified after winning the Region VI title. John Brown concludes their season with an overall record of 13-6-2.
Bethel improves their record to 14-5-2 on the season and advances to Thursday's second round matches. They will face second-seeded Graceland University (Iowa) at 2:15 p.m. (CST) at College Boulevard Activity Center.
