OLATHE, Kan. - The top-seeded Martin Methodist College (Tenn.) RedHawks defeated 16th-seeded McKendree College (Ill.) 2-0 in the second round of the 2005 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship. All games are being at the College Boulevard Activity Center in Olathe, Kan.
Martin Methodist scored their first goal in the 17th minute when Julia Bazi put a cross from Lisa Mann into the back of the net. The final goal of the game came just over three minutes later when Sara Perrigan scored her team-leading 18th goal of the season. Kelly Lewicki and Lisa Mann each earned an assist on the goal, giving the team a total of 122 for the season. The total places the RedHawks third in NAIA history.
The win gives Martin Methodist their first national tournament victory as the team fell in a penalty-kick shootout in last year's national championship to Concordia University (Ore.).
The Bearcats see their 12-game winning streak come to an end. Junior goalkeeper Natalie Jameson made three saves in the match and only allowed a total of 18 goals this season. McKendree advanced to the second round in their first national championship as well in 2003; the Bearcats defeated 17th-seeded Savannah College of Art and Design (Ga.) 1-0 in yesterday's first-round. The team finishes their season with a 17-3-1 record.
Martin Methodist advances to Saturday's quarterfinal round at 2:15 p.m. (CST). They will face the winner of tomorrow's match-up between eighth-seeded Concordia University (Ore.) (17-4-0) and ninth-seeded Madonna University (Mich.) (16-1-4).
