OLATHE, Kan. - Reily Madigan scored her second goal of the season just before halftime to advance second-seeded Graceland University (Iowa) to the quarterfinals with a 1-0 win against Bethel College (Tenn.). All games of the 2005 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship are being played at the College Boulevard Activity Center in Olathe, Kan.
Senior defender Madigan's goal came at the 44:09 mark after a Misako Inaba corner kick. It was Inaba's eighth assist of the season. Bethel out-shot Graceland 14-6 in the game, but Graceland senior goalkeeper Maria Prieto made seven saves in the game and has only allowed ten goals this season.
Bethel was making its third consecutive national championship appearance. The fifteenth-seeded team defeated John Brown University (Ark.) 3-1 in yesterday's first round and qualified for the national championship by defeating Covenant College (Ga.) 2-0 in the Region XII championship match. Bethel concludes its season with a 14-6-2 record.
Graceland advances to Saturday's quarterfinal round at noon (CST). They will face the winner of tomorrow's match-up between seventh-seeded Lee University (Tenn.) (17-4-0) and tenth-seeded College of St. Mary (Neb.) (18-2-1).
