OLATHE, Kan. - Sixth-seeded Lee University (Tenn.) advanced to Saturday's quarterfinal round of the NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship with a 2-1 victory over 11th-seeded Carroll College (Mont.) Friday morning at the College Boulevard Activity Center in Olathe, Kan.
Ashley Fosnaugh of Lee put her team on the board first, scoring in the 11th minute for her fifth goal of the season. The Lady Flames pushed their lead to 2-0 in the 26th minute Janaina Novaes found the back of the net off a cross from Jodie McGuckin. It was Novaes' 21st goal of the year.
Later in the first half, Carroll cut the Lee advantage in half with a goal in the 39th minute as Hannah Young tucked a ball inside the near post off an assist from Cassidy Merrick to put the score to 2-1.
In the second half, both teams were unable to take advantage of goal-scoring opportunities as the game ended with Lee remaining on top, 2-1. For the game, Lee out-shot Carroll, 17-9.
Carroll ends the 2006 season with a 13-6-1 record, while Lee improved to 19-3.
With Lee's victory, it sets up a rematch of last year's national championship game against third-seeded Martin Methodist College (Tenn.) beginning on Saturday at 10 a.m.
