OLATHE, Kan. - Making its first ever appearance at the NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship, Point Loma Nazarene University (Calif.) needed a half of play to work out first-time jitters before settling in and advancing to the quarterfinals after a 2-0 win over Saint Xavier University (Ill.) Friday afternoon at the College Boulevard Activity Center in Olathe, Kan.
After playing a scoreless first half, Point Loma Nazarene scored its first goal in the 48th minute when Amanda Rowan found the back of the net off a rebound of a Caitlan Footit shot to take a 1-0 lead. The Sea Lions put the game out of reach ten minutes later when Footit scored a goal of her own off a Christine Grover assist to increase the lead to 2-0.
Saint Xavier University, the Region VII champion, ends its season with a record if 19-4-0, while Point Loma Nazarene moves on with a record of 15-5-0.
The Sea Lions advance to Saturday's 3 p.m. quarterfinal where they will take on the second-seeded Blue Raiders of Lindsey Wilson College.
