OLATHE, Kan. - In a classic #8 vs. # 9 match up, #8 Concordia University (Ore.) bested #9 Madonna University (Mich.), 1-0, in a second-round game at the 2005 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship. All games are being contested at the College Boulevard Activity Center in Olathe, Kan.
The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie at the end of the first period with neither team having much of a chance to score as there was only one shot on goal. Concordia came out aggressive during the second half with four shots on goal, finally scoring at the 76:03 time mark. Samantha Smith hit a header off her own rebound for the only score of the game.
Madonna finishes the season at 16-2-4 after receiving an At-Large berth to the tournament. Brittany Cervi recorded four saves but the Crusaders were out shot 14-4.
Junior Kali Smith recorded the shut out, her sixth of the season for the Cavaliers. Concordia (18-4-0), last year's runner-up, advances to the quarterfinals and face top-seeded Martin Methodist College (22-1-0) on Saturday at 2:15 p.m.
