OLATHE, Kan. - Janaina Noaves scored a hat trick as Lee University (Tenn.) played College of Saint Mary (Neb.) to a 5-4 victory in second-round action at the 2005 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship. All games are being contested at the College Boulevard Activity Center in Olathe, Kan.
The two teams provided the highest scoring display of the tournament, combining for nine goals, just one shy of the tournament record. The first half saw six goals with a 3-3 deadlock. Lee jumped to the early lead on a goal by Jodie McGuckin from Tiffany Cox in the 14th minute. Saint Mary responded just six minutes later on Michelle Linbo's unassisted goal. Lee took a 3-1 lead on two goals from Noaves, an unassisted goal on the far post and a one-on-one goal in the box. Saint Mary tied the score after Emily Lage scored two goals before the end of the period.
Noaves started the scoring in the second half with a five-footer from Cox and McGuckin. At 56:30. Teammate Danielle McDowell found the back of the net two minutes later to give Lee a 5-3 lead. St. Mary battled back with a goal from Katie North on an assist from Carrie Sharp. St. Mary's missed a chance to tie when Molly McGowan's shot went wide.
The loss drops No. 10 Saint Mary, which won the Region IV tournament, 18-3-1 on the year. Lage finished with 12 goals on the year to lead the Flames. Sharp recorded nine assists on the year.
Novaes, who broke the school's season scoring record earlier this season, now has 28 goals to lead Lee (18-4-0) as the Flames will play second-seeded Graceland University (Iowa) in a quarterfinal game on Saturday at noon (CDT).
