OLATHE, Kan. - No. 12 Westmont College (Calif.) became the lowest seed to advance to the quarterfinals of the NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship since seeding began in 2000 as the Crusaders took a 2-0 game from fifth-seeded and defending national champion Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) in the second round. The tournament is being played at the College Boulevard Activity Center in Olathe, Kan.
The teams entered the second half deadlocked at 0-0 before Amy Lawson found the back of the net on a header off a rebound at 48:08 in what turned out to be the winning goal for the Warriors. Lawson scored an insurance goal in the 85th minute after a defensive steal 40 yards out. Westmont outshot Lindsey Wilson 16-14 and had six shots on goal. Westmont goal keeper Emalia Cornwell had five saves for only her fourth shut out of the year.
Defending champion Lindsey Wilson eliminated Westmont in last year's second round 1-0 en route to the 2004 national title. Five different Blue Raider players had shots on goal without being able to put one in the net. LWC finishes the season at 16-5-1.
Westmont advances to face #4 Houghton College (N.Y.) (20-0-1) on Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
