OLATHE, Kan. - After splitting the two previous matches this season, Azusa Pacific University (Calif.) prevailed when it mattered most, defeating Westmont College (Calif.) 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2006 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship Saturday afternoon at the College Boulevard Activity Center in Olathe, Kansas.
After a scoreless, closely-contested first half, Azusa Pacific would out-shoot Westmont, 16-1, in the second half and eventually score the game's lone goal when Randie Massro scored off a Karen Lawrence free kick at 61:43.
For the match, Azusa Pacific out-shot Westmont, 18-5, including a 7-0 edge in shots on goal. APU goalkeeper Jill Colfer recorded her second shutout of the tournament and 13th of the season.
Westmont College, an at-large qualifier, ends its season with a record of 14-6-1, while Azusa Pacific improves to 20-1-0.
Azusa Pacific moves on to Monday's semifinals where it will meet the winner of Concordia University (Ore.) and Houghton College (N.Y.) beginning at 3 p.m. It is APU's first appearance in the semifinals since 2002.
