OLATHE, Kan. - Lee University (Tenn.) may not have scored as many goals as the Flames did in yesterday's 5-4 second-round victory, but the two goals they did score was enough to propel Lee into the semifinals with a 2-1 victory against Graceland University (Iowa). The 2005 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship is being played at the College Boulevard Activity Center.
Lee jumped to an early lead when Janaina Novaes scored on a header at the 6:51 mark off an assist by Sierra Willoughby for the only score in the first half. Graceland knotted the game 1-1 when Lara Guscott scored off a rebound in front of the box during the 54th minute.
The two teams played a fast-paced game much of the second half, with both teams taking multiple shots. Lee's break came when Amanda Sundell was carded with her second yellow for Graceland in the 82nd minute, providing Lee with a power play situation. Lee capitalized just five minutes later when Danielle McCullough scored on a scramble in front of the net from Novaes.
Graceland, which qualified for the tournament as an At-Large, went 1-1 in this year's tournament. The Yellow Jackets defeated #15 Bethel College (Tenn.) 1-0 in the second round and finished the season at 15-3-2. Maria Prieto had six saves in the loss.
Novaes, who has the tournament's lone hat trick in yesterday's game, scored her 29th goal on the season for the Flames. Caitlin Wohlander recorded two saves. Lee advances to the semifinals and will meet the winner of Azusa Pacific University/Simon Fraser University (B.C.) game on Monday at 8 p.m. (Central).
