Top-seed Martin Methodist Advances to Semis

Nov. 19, 2005

OLATHE, Kan. - Top-seed Martin Methodist College (Tenn.) posted a 2-0 victory against #8 Concordia University (Ore.) in quarterfinal action at the 2005 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship to advance to the Fab Four. The tournament is being played at the College Boulevard Activity Center.

Victoria Charnley scored the only goal in the first half on a penalty kick in the 42nd minute for Martin Methodist. The PK resulted from a hand ball in the box. Lisa Mann scored the insurance goal for MMC at the 66:17 mark on a pass from Maria Sonnerborg. The RedHawks had 17 shots and six shots on goal in the contest. Sophomore Sarah Prendergast recorded three saves in her ninth shut out of the year.

The two teams met in last year's tournament on the exact same date with a tied outcome. Concordia advanced 5-4 on PK as was last year's runner-up. Concordia (18-5-0) was making its fifth tournament appearance. CU had 15 shots and five shots on goal, but could not slip one past Prendergast. The Cavaliers shot two balls towards the end of the game, but both went wide to end their season.

In just its second appearance in the tournament, Martin Methodist (22-1-0) advances to a Monday semifinal match up against the winner of the Westmont College (Calif.)/Houghton College (N.Y.) game at 6 p.m. (Central).
