OLATHE, Kan. - Sixth-seeded Simon Fraser University (B.C.) needed to score just one goal in a 2-1 victory against #3 Azusa Pacific University (Calif.) as the Cougars opened the scoring with an own goal in a quarterfinal game at the 2005 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship. The tournament is being played at the College Boulevard Activity Center.
Trying to clear a cross from a Simon Fraser forward, an Azusa Pacific defender slid into the pass and kicked it by her own goalie for the own goal at 06:12. The goal gave SFU a 1-0 lead. APU knotted the contest in the 21st minute on a right-footed, one-timer by Bridget Brotherton. Stephanie Hannemann and Shannon Coe had the assists. Simon Fraser's Carlen Oates scored the what would be the game-winning goal before the end of the half for the 2-1 score.
The second half was a defensive battle as the two took turns controlling the ball. Azusa Pacific out shot The Clan 19-6 but could not connect on seven of its eight shots on goal. Simon Fraser keeper Michele Gademans had an outstanding night in goal with seven saves.
In its eighth tournament appearance, top-ranked Azusa Pacific went 1-1- defeating #14 Indiana Wesleyan University 3-0 in the second round before losing tonight. APU finishes the season at 17-1-4.
No stranger to the latter rounds, Simon Fraser (12-4-3) advances to the semifinal round for its fifth time in nine tries. SFU was victorious all in four of its previous semifinal games and won the national title in 2000. The Clan will battle #7-seed Lee University (Tenn.) (19-4-0). Lee beat second-seeded Graceland University (Iowa) 2-1 earlier in the day. Game time is set for Monday, November 21 at 8 p.m. (Central.)
