Lindsey Wilson Knocks Off Defending Champion Martin Methodist

Lindsey Wilson returns to the title game for the first time since 2004

Nov. 20, 2006

OLATHE, Kan. - Second-seeded Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) secured a spot in the 2006 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship game after recording a 2-1 semifinal victory over third-seeded Martin Methodist College (Tenn.) Monday night at the College Boulevard Activity Center in Olathe, Kan.

In two previous matchups this season, Lindsey Wilson had defeated Martin Methodist on both occasions, once in the regular season by a score of 4-1 and again in the Region XI Championship, 3-0.

Martin Methodist put pressure on Lindsey Wilson early as Lisa Mann scored to the far post off an assist from Victoria Charnley in the 10th minute to take a 1-0 advantage.

The Blue Raiders got off to a running start in the second half, scoring two goals in a span of three minutes to shift the momentum in their favor. In the 54th minute, Hishamar Faulkner took a long through ball from Omolyn Davis and then outran the RedHawk defense to knot the score up at 1-1. Davis scored a goal of her own three minutes later at 56:31 off an assist from Marie Gallagher to take the 2-1 lead.

Martin Methodist had chances to score later in the half, as Clare Sykes had a shot hit off the bar with 12 minutes remaining, while Martin Methodist had a breakaway spoiled with 9:30 left to play when the Blue Raider defense broke up the attack.

Martin Methodist's goal was the first given up by Lindsey Wilson in 12 consecutive games, a streak that began after a 4-1 win against Martin Methodist on Oct. 1.

Martin Methodist, the 2005 national champion, ends its season with a record of 19-4-0, while Lindsey Wilson improves to 22-2-0.

No. 2 Lindsey Wilson will meet top-seeded Azusa Pacific University (Calif.) Tuesday night for the 2006 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship. The two teams met in the regular season at the Lady Flames Classic at Lee University (Tenn.), where Azusa Pacific was victorious over Lindsey Wilson, 2-1. Tuesday's final will begin at 6 p.m. at the College Boulevard Activity Center in Olathe, Kansas.
