RedHawks Advance in Shootout to Championship Game

OLATHE, Kan. - In the first overtime game of the tournament, top-seeded Martin Methodist College (Tenn.) advanced in a 4-3 shootout over 12th-seeded Westmont College (Calif.). The two teams played to a 1-1 tie after regulation and two ten-minute overtime periods. The tournament is being played at the College Boulevard Activity Center.

Westmont got on the scoreboard first with a goal by junior midfielder Jessica Schoepke at the 48:37 mark after a pass from the left corner of the box from Brianna Russo. Martin Methodist would respond just six minutes later when sophomore Amanda Johansson scored her 13th goal of the season with assists from Lisa Mann and Kelly Lewicki.

Martin Methodist was on the offensive in both overtime periods, out-shooting Westmont 13-3 in the extra periods and 31-11 overall. Westmont goalkeeper Emalia Cornwell made seven saves in the match, including five in the two overtimes, to send the game to a shootout.

Martin Methodist's Harumi Someya made the first shot for the RedHawks and the shootout was even after Westmont's Kayla Crandall made her attempt as well. Kelly Lewicki and Clare Sykes made theirs, while Westmont's Anna Gropp and Heather Brown got shots past the RedHawks' Sarah Prendergast to even the shootout at 3-3. Maiko Higashiyama, who only had five minutes worth of penalty kick practice during the season, put her shot in the upper-left corner and then teammate Prendergast saved the shot by the Warriors' Scottee Reid to end the match.

Westmont was making its twelfth national championship appearance and has won five national championships in women's soccer. They become the first 12th seed to ever advance past the quarterfinals and conclude their season with a 12-3-4 overall record.

Martin Methodist advances to their first national title game and will face the winner of the second semifinal match between seventh-seeded Lee University (Tenn.) (19-4-0) and sixth-seeded Simon Fraser University (B.C.) (12-4-3). Former conference opponents, Martin Methodist defeated Lee 4-1 at home earlier this season, but Lee holds a 2-11 all-time advantage against the RedHawks. This will be the third consecutive year that the top seed has advanced to the championship game. Game time is set for 7 p.m. (Central) Tuesday, November 22.
