OLATHE, Kan. - Lee University (Tenn.) becomes the first seventh-seed to advance to the national championship game after its 1-0 win against sixth-seeded Simon Fraser University (B.C.) in the semifinals of the 2005 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship. The tournament is being played at the College Boulevard Activity Center.
Freshman forward Tiffany Cox scored her first goal of the tournament, and the eventual game-winner, in the 15th minute. Janaina Novaes and Sarah McCullough each earned an assist on the goal, as Cox headed it into the upper-right corner of the net.
Simon Fraser outshot Lee 11-9 in the game, but only had two shots on goal compared to Lee's eight. Junior goalkeeper Michele Gademans only allowed 10 goals during the season for Simon Fraser and had nine shutouts. She currently leads the tournament in saves with 22.
Simon Fraser was making its ninth national championship appearance and has won two national championships and advanced to the semifinals on two previous occasions. The Clan concludes their season with a 12-5-3 overall record.
Lee (20-4-0) advances to their first national title game and will face top-seeded Martin Methodist College (Tenn.), who advanced past 12th-seeded Westmont College (Calif.) in a shootout earlier tonight. Former conference opponents, Martin Methodist defeated Lee 4-1 at home earlier this season, but Lee holds a 2-11 all-time advantage against the RedHawks. Game time is set for 7 p.m. (Central) Tuesday, November 22.
