OLATHE, Kan. - Top-seeded Martin Methodist College (Tenn.) and seventh-seeded Lee University (Tenn.) will meet Tuesday night at 7 p.m. (Central) to decide the championship in the 2005 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship. The tournament is being played at the College Boulevard Activity Center.
This is the first championship game appearance for Martin Methodist, who advances to the final game after prevailing in a penalty kick shootout against 12th-seeded Westmont College (Calif.) in the semifinals. This is the RedHawks' second national tournament appearance as the team fell in the first round of the 2004 tournament to the eventual runner-up in a penalty kick shootout.
Since the tournament went to single-elimination format with seeding in 2000, the top seed has advanced to at least the semifinals every year while the top seed has only captured the title once (2004, Lindsey Wilson (Ky.)).
Lee becomes the first seventh seeded team to advance to the championship game. The Lady Flames defeated sixth-seeded Simon Fraser University (B.C.) 1-0 earlier tonight in the semifinals. Lee is making its second national tournament appearance and lost in a penalty kick shootout in the quarterfinals of the 2004 event to the eventual national champion.
Former conference opponents, Martin Methodist and Lee met on October 1 this fall, with Martin Methodist prevailing at home in a 4-1 win. Overall, the Lady Flames hold a 2-11 advantage against the RedHawks.
This will be the second time that two teams from the same state will meet in the title game. In 2001, Westmont (Calif.) defeated Azusa Pacific University (Calif.) 1-0. The 2005 national championship has been hosted by the Olathe Chamber of Commerce and Park University (Mo.).
