DECATUR, Ala. - Lubbock Christina (Texas) advanced in the winner's bracket with a 3-1 win over St. Gregory's (Okla.) at the 2008 NAIA Softball National Championship double elimination bracket.
Honda Rodriguez went 2-for-4 and scored two runs to lead the offense for the Lady Chaparrals. Ginalee Davis drove in two runs and Marissa Gonzalez pitched complete game allowing just two hits for the win.
Lubbock Christian put the pressure on the Cavaliers early with two runs in the top of the first inning. Lisa Stratton, Rodriguez and Raquel Hawkins all reached base on a walk and two singles to open the game. Davis singled to drive in two runs. St. Gregory's cut the deficit in half in the sixth. Jessica Munson walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Jessica Reed's double to deep left. The Lady Chaps added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to seal the game when Rodriguez singled, stole second, moved to third on passed ball and scored on Hawkins single.
Sharon Bell started on the mound for St. Gregory's and struck out seven batters in seven innings.
Lubbock Christian will take on Mobile (Ala.) in the winner's bracket at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20 while St. Gregory's will face Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) in the loser's bracket at 10 a.m.
