CALIFORNIA BAPTIST ADVANCES TO FACE POINT LOMA

Eliminates Simon Fraser

 

Decatur, Ala. - From the 2007 NAIA National Softball Championship at Wilson Morgan Park in Decatur, Alabama, California Baptist University (59-4) eliminated Simon Fraser University (B.C.) (25-5) with a 6-1 victory.

 


 

 

The Lancers of California Baptist scored five runs in the top of the second inning with two outs to claim a 5-0 lead and never looked back.  Left fielder Cassandrah Carreon (2-for-3) led the five-run rally with a single to right center field.  A single by Shawna Rainwater (2-for-4) and a bobble by second baseman Heather Riess scored Carreon. An additional error and a double by Sara Goforth (2-for-3) added two more runs to the Lancer lead. Goforth later scored the fifth run of the inning on a single by Chantal Millard (1-for-4). Goforth later scored the only additional Lancer run of the game in the top of the fourth inning.

 

Rainwater and Erin Moore (1-for-4) lead the Lancer offense in the tournament with a .440 batting average.  Both players are 8-for-18 on the tournament.

 

Candice Thomas earned the victory for California Baptist to improve her season record to 31-2.  Thomas pitched seven complete innings allowing one earned run and striking out three batters.  For the tournament Thomas has pitched 30 innings with a 0.47 earned run average.

 

Simon Fraser's lone run came in the bottom of the third inning when third baseman Erin McClean hit her first home run of the tournament. Center fielder Melanie Matthews and right fielder Christine Barr both went 2-for-3 for the Clan.

 

Senior Jennifer Schreyer suffered the loss to drop her record to 18-4 on the season.  Schreyer pitched two complete innings before freshman Jennifer Van Egdom came in for relief in the third inning.  Schreyer allowed five runs, none of them being earned.

 

California Baptist advances to the championship game of the loser's bracket against Point Loma Nazarene University (Calif.) at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday.  The winner of that game will face Oklahoma City University in the championship game at 12:30 p.m.
