St. Peters, Mo.- The California Baptist University men's and women's swimming & diving teams took one step closer to claiming the 2006 NAIA titles with another impressive performance in day three of the NAIA Swimming & Diving Championships in the St. Peter Rec-Plex in St. Peter's, Mo. The California Baptist University men's team is looking to snap their six-year streak of finishing in second-place while the women's team is looking to grab their second consecutive title.

California Baptist men grabbed six of the seven events on day three to extend their overall lead in the team rankings. The Lancers won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:24.71 with swimmers Russell Thompson, Aaron Abellano, Mike Looy and Charlie Weaver competing.

Lancer Brad Terwiliger took home the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:01.81 while teammate Russell Thompson won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:40.58.

Jan Tichy took home two titles on day three winning the 100-yard Butterfly with a time of 48.99 and the 100-yard Backstroke with a time of 50.75. The final California Baptist swimmer to win an individual event was David Blasco who won the 100-yard Breaststroke with a time of 56.70.

Lindenwood University (Mon.) won the final event of the night, the 400-yard medley relay, after California Baptist was disqualified for a false start. Lindenwood won the event with a time of 3:28.29, giving the Lions their first relay national title in school history. Swimming for the Lions were Thomas Bourdin, Ivo Ivanov, Jon Lau and Chris Ricketts.

On the women's side California Baptist extended its lead over Savannah College of Arts & Design (Ga.) by winning four of the eight events on day three. The Lancer women's team took home the 400-yard medley relay title with a time of 3:56.25. Nicole Shipman, Kellie West, Jennelle Furruto and Katelyn Butler swam for the Lancers.


 

Lancer Kimie Cook won the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:28.03 and teammate Kellie West won the 100-yard breaststroke title with a time of 1:05.23. Nicole Shipman rounded out the event titles for California Baptist with a win in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.94.

SCAD took home three titles on day three, winning the 200-yard freestyle relay, 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard freestyle. Bees Cassie Dixon, Elizabeth Harr, Laine Benthall and Abigail Doxsey won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:36.58. Doxsey took home the 100-yard butterfly title with a time of 57.21 while Rachel Fritts won the 200-yard freestyle title with a time of 1:54.18.

Host school Lindenwood added another title when Kyla Kachman won the Women's 3-meter diving with a final score of 251.30, edging her nearest competitor by just over 10 points.

California Baptist holds the lead in team rankings on both the men's and women's side. On the men's side the Lancers have a total score of 527 with Lindenwood University in second with 190 points and Illinois Tech with 186 points. On the women's side California Baptist has 409 points with Savannah College of Arts & Design in second with 304 points and Lindenwood University in third with 184 points.

The final day of the 2006 NAIA Swimming & Diving Championships will take place tomorrow, Saturday, March 4 at the St. Peters Rec-Plex in St. Peters, Mo. Competition will begin at 10 a.m.
