ST. PETERS, Mo.- The California Baptist University men's and women's swimming and diving teams both took home the 2006 NAIA titles. For the men's team it breaks a six-year run of second-place finishes. The win for the Lancer women's team is their second consecutive title.
Brad Terwiliger, Jan Tichy and Russell Thompson from the California Baptist University men's swimming and diving team tied for Most Outstanding Male swimmers.
On the women's side California Baptist's Kimie Cook and Abigail Doxsey of Savannah College Art and Design (Ga.) were named Co-Outstanding Female swimmers. For Cook it was her second consecutive such award. All three men's and both women's Co-Outstanding Swimmers won three titles during the championships.
The California Baptist men's team continued their dominance from the start of the championships, wining five of six events on the fourth and final day of the championship. The day started with Lancer Brad Terwiliger winning the 1650-yard freestyle swim with a time of 15:56.07. Jan Tichy followed by winning the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:49.00 and teammate Russell Thompson won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.38. Lancer David Blasco won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:04.45 to wrap up the individual awards for the Lancers. The Lancer team finished the championships by winning the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:05.57. Tichy, Thompson, Michael Budny and Charlie Weaver compted for the Lancers.
Ryan Feuerstein from Illinois Tech took home the 200-yard butterfly title with a time of 1:50.24.
The California Baptist men's team won the national title with a total of 752 points. Lindenwood University finished in second with 272 points and Savannah College of Arts & Design was third with 260 points.
On the women's side California Baptist finished the championships with 457 points while Savannah College of Art & Design was second with 336 points and Lindenwood University was third with 201 points.
Individually Nicole Shipman and Kimie Cook took home national titles on the final night for California Baptist. Shipman won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:05.78 while Cook won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:21.46. The California Baptist women's team also took home the 400-yard freestyle relay title with a time of 3:32.92. Lancers Kellie West, Cheryl Ogden, Jennelle Furruto and Katelyn Butler competed in the event.
Savannah College of Art & Design had two swimmers take home national titles on the final day. Abigail Doxsey won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.23 and Rachel Fritts won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:05.00.
