DAY 1 RESULTS
MOBILE, Ala--The opening day of the 2008 Women's Tennis National Championship is in the books and eight unseeded qualifiers advanced to face the top-eight seeds in second-round action Tuesday at the Mobile Tennis Center.
Embry-Riddle (Fla.) pitched the only shut out on day one, downing Ohio Dominican by a 9-0 score, while Southern Nazarene (Okla.) cruised versus Nebraska Wesleyan 7-2 and Xavier (La.) disposed of McKendree (Ill.) 7-2.
A pair of 5-4 matches highlighted the action, with Cumberland (Tenn.) and Indiana Wesleyan advancing in close contests. Cumberland took two-of-three doubles matches and opened singles play by taking the No.1 and No. 2 matches to hold on versus Bethany (Kan.), while Indiana Wesleyan did just the opposite, rallying after Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) took a 2-1 lead in doubles play and then claimed the top two singles contests.
Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) advanced by defeating Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) 6-3, Union (Ky.) beat Georgetown (Ky.) 6-3 and Westmont (Calif.) beat host-team Mobile (Ala.) 6-3 to round out the action.
The Tuesday matches will be: Auburn-Montgomery (1) v. Point Loma, SCAD (8) v. Embry-Riddle, Azusa Pacific (5) v. Westmont, Vanguard (4) v. Xavier, Lindsey Wilson (3) v. Union, California Baptist (6) v. Cumberland, Berry (7) v. Southern Nazarene and Fresno Pacific (2) v. Indiana Wesleyan.
