MOBILE, Ala. - The second day of play saw all top seeds advance, including the defending national champion, to the quarterfinal round at the 2006 NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship. The event is being held May 15-19 at the Mobile Tennis Center for the third consecutive year.
Top-seeded Auburn University Montgomery (Ala.) advanced one step closer to defending its national title with a 5-0 victory against Lewis-Clark State College (Idaho). Fresno Pacific University (Calif.), the tournament's second seed, was the only other team to win 5-0.
AUM will play Freed-Hardeman University (Tenn.) in the next round. The two teams met once during the season with AUM winning 5-0 in early April. Third-seeded Azusa Pacific University (Calif.) will meet a common foe in conference member Vanguard University (Calif.). The two split during the regular season with each winning once. Fresno Pacific continues its storybook first season and will face Berry College (Ga.) while Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) and Southern Nazarene University (Okla.) square off in the final match.
The tournament concludes on Friday with the championship match at 10 a.m. (Central). This marks the 26th year the NAIA has sponsored a national championship in women's tennis. AUM holds the most titles with six national crowns.
