COLUMBIA, Mo. - California Baptist went 2-0 on day one of pool play while Texas at Brownsville defeated No. 9 Lewis-Clark State at the 28th Annual NAIA Volleyball National Championship.
No. 2 California Baptist won both of its matches in three games and went 2-0 on the day. The Lancers defeated Virginia-Wise, 30-10, 30-12, 30-28 and Texas at Brownsville, 30-25, 30-16, 30-21. UTB picked a win against Lewis-Clark State, 3-1 (28-30, 30-28, 30-22, 30-25), and finished day 1-1.
Vernaia Willis, one of three Lancers in double figures in kills, led the team with 26 against UTB. Fei Shi had 18 while Yudelka Bonilla chipped in 12 kills for Cal Baptist.
Claudia Alarcon was the team leader for Texas at Brownsville with 26 kills against Lewis-Clark and nine against Cal Baptist.
Lewis-Clark got contributions form Anile Clemente (20 kills) and Cintia Alessi (18 kills).
