COLUMBIA, Mo. - No. 4 Biola (Calif.) defeated the defending national champion, No. 5 National American (S.D.), 3-1, in the first quarterfinal match, ending the Mavericks' hopes of back-to-back titles. The Lady Eagles will advance to the first semifinal match on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. against the winner of Fresno Pacific (Calif.) and Texas at Brownsville.
After dropping the first game, 30-27, the Lady Eagles used a balanced attack to bounce back and take the next three games, 30-24, 30-22 and 30-27. Five players had nine or more kills for Biola led by Maggie McGill with 13 kills. Kristen Peterson, Meghan Warkentin and Kelsey Mitchell all had 12 while Jessica Buffum added nine. Abbie Wright and Christina Perkins split time at the setter position and finished the match with 25 and 21 assists respectively for the Lady Eagles. Katie Stevens led the defense with 32 digs while Dani Aigaki dug 17 Mavericks' attacks. Biola improves its overall record to 32-7.
National American had four players that recorded double-doubles. Daniela Oliveira had 22 kills and 12 digs while Thamy Viana added 20 kills and 15 digs and Tais Batistella recorded 16 kills and 15 digs. Amanda Silva assisted on 52 kills and posted 19 digs. Leslie DaSilva also reached double digits in digs with 19 and added eight kills.
The Mavericks will end their season with 28-11 overall record.
