SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The top seeds prevailed again in the second day of the NAIA Volleyball National Tournament. Fifth seeded Columbia (Mo.) College defeated Dordt (Iowa) College 3-1 while eighth seeded Azusa Pacific swept the University of Mobile 3-0. Both Columbia and Azusa remain undefeated at the tournament.
In the early game, the Cougars of Columbia had their hands full and were push in each of the four games. Columbia was able to pull out the victory by scores of 25-23, 28-26, 24-26 and 27-25. Cougar outside hitter Flavia Lino was a dominating force in the matchup, posting 27 kills. Setter Luana Branco had 54 assists and seven kills and Tally Mattos notched 49 digs. Kristin De Ronde led a balanced attack for Dordt with 15 kills.
Azusa Pacific had little trouble shutting down the Rams from Mobile in straight sets, 25-17, 25-20 and 25-19. Azusa’s Jill Baker and Chelsea Daley combined for 21 kills to lead the Cougars. Daley also had ten digs, while Ariel Beeststra chipped in four blocks. Syretta Baldwin led the charge for the Rams of Mobile with eight kills in 17 attempts.
